The effects of varying high intensity ultrasonic treatment time on montmorillonite/epoxy nanocomposites

Matthew Scott Tumey, Purdue University

Abstract

Using ultrasonic treatment to disperse MMT nanoparticles into an epoxy matrix system has been found to increase the mechanical properties of the epoxy material. This experiment used ultrasonic treatment at a high power of 1500W to disperse the MMT nanoparticles. The variables in the experiment were the treatment times, (one, two, and three hours) and the MMT amount (one half and one percent by weight). The material was tested in tension and analyzed with SEM. The results from the experiment were mixed and unexpected, but provided information on how the processing of these materials can be affected by ultrasonic treatment.
