Developing a validated measure of media escape
Abstract
Although many researchers and theorists have explored the concept of media escape and the process of escapism, there still remains a great deal we do not know about what factors influence an individual's likelihood to use media as a method of escape. This is likely due to the inconsistent theory surrounding media escape, which is itself caused by a lack of conceptual clarity and poor measurement. The current project accomplished two goals: first, it investigated the media escape literature, synthesized the findings, and arrived at a workable definition of media escape and second, it used that definition to create and validate a measure of media escape frequency.
