The Listener

Alexander Ojeda Camarota, Purdue University

Abstract

The Listener is a collection of seven linked short stories set in the San Francisco Bay Area spanning a time period from the late 80s to the present day. Most of the stories revolve around characters who are in some way connected to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing world. Issues ranging from American Sign Language to cochlear implants to native language acquisition are all explored. Reoccurring themes in all the stories involve death and grief, and the disconnect between parents and their offspring, particularly when the offspring are deaf and the parents hearing.^
