Construction of a web based tutorial for three-dimensional visualization of ternary phase diagrams

Weizhuo Zhao, Purdue University

Abstract

Over the past five years, there has been an ongoing project at Purdue University Calumet to construct a web based tutorial for 3D visualization of ternary phase diagrams. The rationale for doing this project is the need for students, at all levels, and working professionals to better visualize ternary phase diagrams. The tutorial will incorporate both hypothetical and "real" slag ternary systems, with emphasis on slags relevant to iron and steel making. This study focuses on the construction and industrial application of four slag ternary systems: CaO-FeO-SiO2, Al2O 3-CaO-MgO, CaO-MgO-SiO2, and Al2O3-CaO-SiO 2. The computerized methodology for constructing interactive three dimensional liquidus surfaces and their corresponding two dimensional isothermal projections were determined. These models were then incorporated into the web based tutorial. Changes of composition (slag path) during steelmaking are shown as the industrial application of these ternary systems.
