Essential components of engineering design problems

Daniel Carl Brenner, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify essential components within a design problem needed to promote meaningful learning of engineering principles in high school students as identified by high school technology education teachers, professional engineers and technology teacher educators. Additionally, this study identified differing perspectives between high school technology education teachers, engineers, and technology teacher educators. A three part Delphi study was used to collect data in order to answer the research questions. As part of the Delphi Process, top rated components were sorted by mean ratings generated through a Likert-type scale. Differing perspectives between groups were identified through the use of a one way ANOVA, and a Tukey-Kramer post hoc test.
