Understanding communication processes within a private, computer-mediated social support group

Rebecca K Ivic, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a listserv as a medium for the provision of social support to a cancer patient who was part of a marginalized community. A taxonomy was constructed showing the types of social and pragmatic support offered through the listserv medium. Marginalization limited the ability for members of the community to provide social support. The listserv was able to facilitate some types of social support, but its nature as a lean medium limited its capabilities. Future research directions are discussed.
