The North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) Data Protocol allows for the bidirectional communication between a host computer and foodservice equipment. This allows for data gathering, this increases efficiency and helps provide more valuable services to their customers. However, there has been low adaption of this technology. The purpose of this study is to provide insight into the barriers to the implementation of the NAFEM Data Protocol. The study surveyed both restaurant general managers and restaurant corporate executives regarding their perceived barriers of implementation regarding the NAFEM Data Protocol. The results show that operators, both restaurant managers and corporate executives, had little awareness of the NAFEM Data Protocol and its capabilities.
