A study of the piston ring - cylinder bore interface for bent axis axial piston pump using an advanced computer model

Rohit Kumar, Purdue University

Abstract

The thesis presents a model developed to study the behavior of the piston ring – cylinder bore interface of a bent-axis type axial piston machine. The thesis describes how the gap height between the piston ring and the cylinder bore is calculated. It discusses a couple of approaches for solving the position of the ring in the cylinder bore. The thesis also describes the method in which the pressure field in the gap was calculated and how the leakage was predicted using the pressure generated. To verify the accuracy of the model the predicted case flow has been compared with the measured case flow during steady state measurements of a chosen standard pump.
