Relation between children's attachment security and maternal sensitivity from age 4 to 5.5

Ting Lu, Purdue University

Abstract

The association between child attachment security and quality of maternal caregiving was examined in the longitudinal study with a group of preschool children. The association between stability or change in child security and stability or change in maternal sensitivity was explored. Forty-two children and their mothers participated in the study when the child was 4 years of age, and again when the child was 5.5. Results showed that child attachment security was related to maternal sensitivity at both ages. Mean level stability was found for maternal sensitivity over time, yet no significant correlation was found for either sensitivity or security from age 4 to 5.5. Findings and implications for future research were discussed.
