From one teacher to another: An analysis of the Venerable Bede's in “Abacuc”

John C Tompkins, Purdue University

Abstract

This study argues for a reading of the Venerable Bede’s Exposito Bedae Presbyteri in Canticum Abacuc Prophetae, or In Canticum Abacuc, in light of the canticle’s place as a part of the weekly Lectio Divina of monastic prayer, while taking into account Jean Leclercq’s ideas on monastic ways of reading and Bede’s own decisions regarding Scriptural interpretation. Based on these criteria, the study argues that Bede’s commentary may be read as a communication and meditation on the place and problems of the teacher and preacher addressed to another person who shares the same duties and issues.
