Determinants and Implications of ICTs Use in Employee Informal Communication at Work
Abstract
As ICTs, such as smartphones, Social Networking Sites or Mobile Instant Messaging, are becoming the main tool for personal communication, new issues are arising from increased informal and personal communication among employees. Many organizations perceive that employees’ using ICTs in informal communication at work can significantly lower their productivity and effectiveness. This study seeks new ways to solve such issues with a question—‘How does using ICTs in employee’s informal communication affect organizations?’ Two survey studies were conducted with four structural models. Study 1 (the main study, N=316) examined the use of ICTs in Employee Informal Communication (EIC) at work and its influence on the organization, and Study 2 (N=363) explored the ICTs over-adoption in working and its effects. This study claims that since cooperation among employees is critical in achieving organizational success, employees should be able to build social capital and good quality of relationship with the team/organization through informal communication at the workplace, by providing empirical evidence. This inter-discipline research provides theoretical and practical implications in areas of public relations, management and technology.
