Given the rapidly maturing technology base supporting autonomous systems (airborne drones, land based vehicles such as driverless cars, sea surface and subsurface vehicles) it is merely a matter of a short period of time before these systems are used for evil. Whether airborne drones taking pictures, or driverless cars loaded with explosives programmed to ram a gate, the threat is real and is already manifesting itself throughout the world. This is not a question for the future, but rather a problem we have today, and one growing more pronounced every news cycle. However, the challenge is not merely stopping or mitigating these threats, but how to do so while at the same time allowing for and encouraging the further growth and development of this exciting technology, autonomous systems. Whether they fly, crawl, roll or swim, there is great value, and peril, in this new age of machines that control themselves.
